A Sunny Rainy Day

A Sunny Rainy Day

We have just shot our Spring/Summer photoshoot with the new faces of Urban Village, Simon and Emily.

Many vintage props such as authentic phones, a MOD bean bag, 1960's bicycle, 1970's radio were dugged out to help set the scene and atmosphere at the shoot. We had a number of people watching us as if we had just came out of a time machine! The three key looks that were pulled together by our very own stylist Joey, was Chelsea girl, King's road and the Technical dream.

The day was pretty successful despite the unexpected strong hail stones that attacked us all, in the middle of May! There was also the joy of having some delicious tesco mean deals, getting our models muddled up with mannequins because they were so spot on with Urban Village's finest vintage clothing.

I have to admit, with the amount of captures we have in total, I am very confident that the pictures will look great and you will not be a disappointed. The only problem we could possibly have is that we have TOO many beautiful pictures which leads to difficulty in picking the best ones to showcase.

Here is a sneak peak.... wait for the rest of the pictures next week! Also a behind the scenes video blog soon to follow, with exclusive interviews with our fab models.

Keep an eye out :0)

Mr Polyester

Hello Ladies and Gentleman, Brothers and Sisters, Sons and Daughters of the Urban Village World.

I want to spin you a yarn, tell you a tale and tease your senses with a story before I get to the matter at hand...When I was a small boy I saw the world as a drab and dull place, (coming from Wolverhampton that really isn't hard to imagine) then one glorious day I sat down with my father who switched the telebox onto a certain classic music video channel and with a flash, my eyes and ears rejoiced with delight at the sight of colours and patterns, Gents wearing flamboyant penny collar shirts and neck scarves, ladies dressed in psychedelic mini dresses and some strange blonde haired man speaking in a strange language smoking a comedy cigar, after this I turned to my oracle-like Papa and asked what and where did these wondrous clothes come from? To which he calmy and cooly replied one majestic word, one word that captured a young boy, and that word my dear friends was........... wait for it, wait for it........... Polyester!

Yes readers, Polyester the greatest thing to happen to the fashion world since Mary Quant said to Vidal Sasoon "My hairs getting in my eyes, is there anything you could do with it". Polyester
made entirely by magic, threw off the shackles of wool and the appression of your parent's clothes and  brought colour, pattern, and fresh design to the hard working masses.

If you have ever walked past our Manmoth window and thought "Good gracious those Mannaquins are awash with colour and pattern" then that'll be our old companion, Mr Polyester.

Yes i admit it can get a little warm wearing the hallowed material and yes you can lose anything up to 5 stone in perspiration in a single evening at your local discotheque, but like anything truely irresistable from a classic car or an italian super model. It has passion, a firey, owning a bear as a pet sort of passion and having to wear an extra layer of deoderant is a small price to pay for what it has given us.

Now I have you salavating and begging for a peice of the action, have no fear for at the mightly Urban Village we have clothing made with this very material in abundance so come one, come all, come by bus, come by car, come by small homemade go-karts made in sheds with wheels from a pram if you have to, but come just to bask in the glory of Polyester...... I Thank You.

A MUST read Vintage article!

Is vintage clothing passé?

Successful rummages for vintage clothes seem to be few and far between these days. Charity shop rails are full of old St Michael, C&A and shoulder-padded sequinned pieces, all priced higher than non-clothing cast-offs.

Online stores such as Asos Marketplace throw up vintage items that I, in my late twenties, can remember the first time round - and didn't much like then. And finding genuine vintage pieces on eBay requires you to decipher 'the code' to avoid mistaking a Primark copy for a 1960s original.

The increased demand for vintage pieces in recent years has resulted in higher prices for the raw goods. Judy Berger has been running Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair since 2005, and has recently noticed a "surge" in buyers from the far east and the Netherlands, where vintage is scarce, coming to Britain to buy in bulk. This, she predicts, will push prices up even further.

But with fierce competition from other sellers, many vintage traders are being forced to swallow the rising costs rather than pass them on to customers who could choose to cut out the middleman.

"Everyone is after vintage now," says Audrey Taylor, one half of the Kate & Aud vintage boutique. "There was a time not too long ago when you could buy great vintage bits from charity shops, eBay and car boot sales, but now everyone is selling it online or buying for themselves and you can't get bargains any more."

If sourcing cheap vintage to sell on at a profit is becoming more of a challenge, what type of business will survive? Lynnette Peck Bateman, a magazine and brand consultant who owns an online vintage fashion boutique, believes that, as in any business, carving out a niche is key.

"You need to know exactly who your customer is rather than selling random pieces from different eras at lots of different prices," she says. "My customers follow trends and want vintage that looks current and has an edge, so you won't see long white gloves from the 1920s or aprons from the 1950s that no one will wear."

While fashion trends come and go quicker than you can say "Anna Wintour is styling out that banana print", vintage business owners aren't worried that the styles of the past will fall out of favour.

"There will always be people who like individual and interesting pieces," Bateman says. "In the future I think the price of quality pieces, such as designer items or one-offs, will rise, and the cheaper, more commonplace pieces will fall as more comes on to the market."

Indeed, the mass production of current fashions that fill shops for just a few weeks at a time means that there will be no shortage of items for people to hoard or sell on in the future - although their durability may be in doubt.

For now, 90s production techniques are being given a run for their money as the grunge trend sees fashion fans scour secondhand shops for velvet bodies, chunky boots and oversized jumpers. Personally I'm a 60s and 70s girl at heart, but I'm not immune to the allure of the slouchy hide-all-sins top - particularly as financial uncertainty has me choosing more wearable everyday pieces, as well as the odd investment buy, to become that picky customer Bateman described.

How do you feel about 90s style now being 'vintage'? And has your second-hand shopping experience changed over the years? Is it now harder to find those must-tell-everyone bargains, has vintage familiarity bred contempt, or are you thrilled that there are more places to shop for unique pieces?

We at Urban Village, came across this interesting article, above, " Is vintage clothing passé?" on the Guardian, by Jo- Ann Fortune and thought we would share it to you all.

As you all may be aware that the demand for vintage in the recent years has increased immensely, which ultimately means higher priced are charged as there are less vintage clothing to go around. Everyone is after vintage, from charity shops to Ebay and Asos Marketplace. Individuals are also buying and selling individually online to make some profits, this puts a strain on bargaining. Hence, the reason to higher priced vintage goods.

A major problem that wasn't mentioned is the fact that many Eastern Europe countries such as Poland, Ukraine and Russia are taking many unsorted rags direct from the UK, unfortunately, this does include our beloved vintage peices that we all crave for. These clothing are not appreciated and sold as classic vintage peices, but instead they are turned into industrial wiper rags.

Bulks of vintage peices are disappearing due to this.

We hope that this will come to a natural end as is the normal way! Although this has been happening for many years now and we are only just starting to feel the long term effect of the process.

Sneak Peek!

Sneak Peek!

Sometimes we get an item of clothing in which I think just sums up the Urban Village style, and this is one of those fabulous little numbers! I adore this 2 piece 1960s mod suit - in bright cherry red, it is made from a woven wool type fabric, with a white checked pattern and little white buttons. Everything about this is so neat and stylish, from the large pockets to the A line mini skirt, it really is cute! If that's not enough, I've found not 1 pair, but 3 pairs of cool Mod shoes to go with it, in white leather. And to top it off, pop this fab red vanity case on your arm and watch those heads turn as you skip down the street! None of this is available...yet! But the suit will be on the website within the week and the accessories will be making an appearance in the shop asap! Keep an eye because once they're gone they're gone!

A Day In A Life...

A Day In A Life....

Have you ever wondered how and why does Urban Village's window displays always look so hip? Well here is a chance to understand the process of producing extravagant and exciting vintage artwork. Below is an exclusive interview with our very own team member, Joey, who lets us in some top secret in how to put together an eye catching shop window display.

1. How often do you change the window display?

Every week, to freshen up the shop and because we have so many regular customers, I like to keep them on their toes :0)

2. What is the starting point when you put the outfits together?

What I tend to do is to start with a theme, it can be anything from any special occasions such as St Patrick's day or Swinging London, and from that, it grows into an outfit that I think will go with the theme, taking in consideration of colour palette, silhouette, print and pattern.

3. If you were to give one special tip to making an effective window display, what would it be?

Don't be afraid to be adventurous and let your imagination go wild.

4. Which fashion era is your all time favourite?

Mid to late 60's, only because this was a period of real freedom in fashion, real with sharp tailoring but with a contrast of amazing colours and patterns.

5.  Who are some of your style icons?

Boutiques such as 'Hung on you', 'Granny takes a trip' and 'Lord Kitchener's Valet'. These are all 1960's boutique from Swinging London. Also the likes of Brian Jones, Syd Barrett and Steve Marriot.

A glimpse of the Urban Village Shop

The Urban Village Shop

You’ve seen a video tour of our shop, now is an attempt to show you what the Urban Village shop is all about…but in words with a few beautiful snaps on the side
Once our handy sign guides you into the Urban Village shop, the first thing you will most likely to see is our beautiful denim collection; we have great labels from Levi’s Strauss, Wranger and Lee.

Another thing that will draw your attention to is a suitcase filled with some of our wide range of accessories. You think some of the accessories in the front of the store are enough to make you crave for more vintage? Wait until you get to the back of the shop… that's where the rest of the vintage treasures are, from scarves, belts, to handbags and shoes. These items are essentials; they add the finishing touches to an outfit, just like putting icing on top of a cake!

The glory of our shop is that we cater for both ladies and gents equally; we understand that women are big shoppers but we are also aware that men like to stay cool and stylish too. We have a great mixture of dresses, shirts, blouses, knitwear, for the ladies, with bold print, sophisticated patterns. And for the gents we have some fantastic shirts from labels such as Fred Perry, Adidas and Ralph Lauren etc. We also stock many vintage suits and Harrington jackets, shoes and accessorize. I can guarantee that you will find some serious vintage bargain right here at Urban Village.

Records…records….and did I say records?! Yes I did. Mod, Ska, Punk, Reggae, Rock, film soundtrack, 1960’s, 1970’s, acid jazz, modern beats, R&B, Jazz, Soul. Any one of those genres has your name written all over it? If it did, then what are you waiting for? Pop down to the Urban Village store now!

Also, don’t forget about the books, we have great annuals such as Starky and Hutch, Six Million Dollar, Grange hill and Dangermouse! Absolutely classic stuff :0)

One last thing I would like to share with you guys is about the beautiful head pieces on our mannequins. They are individually hand made with love and passion by our local crafts person name Beth Fisher. All products are upcycled, the idea of re-using materials so they don’t go to waste. She also made bags and fascinators from records, you can’t miss them in the shop because they are quirky and very retro.

That's it for now. Hope you’ve enjoyed this blog as much as I have writing it.
