Women's Denim

Marilyn Monroe famously wore jeans in the 1950's film Clash by Night and 1960's film The Misfits, possibly the first time in popular culture that jeans were seen as having sex appeal for women. Denim soon became the uniform for rebellious college students, hippies and anyone else who identified with social movements such as the sexual revolution and fight for equal rights in the 60's and 70's. They were a symbol of gender equality, independence and freedom!
In the early 50's jeans were high waisted and wide legged, they all came in one length so were worn with big turn ups and women's zips were at the side. They narrowed towards the 60's and zips moved to the centre. With the 60's came tapered jeans and ankle grazers, by now they were available in every colour. Bell bottoms emerged in the late 60's and flared jeans became the most iconic look of the 70's!
